(21) How can I get in touch with Little Kiwi?

1
Why is little kiwi the only manufacturer of kiwi flip nappies?
We designed them and own the design. The little kiwi flip is our own registered design and we were the only people who would take the leap into designing a different shape and style of fitted nappy to a traditional hourglass. It is the only truly flat folding fitted shaped nappy which is manufactured from a single piece of complete fabric.

2
How much waste does a kiwi flip nappy produce?
The kiwi flip nappy produces no waste in production. It is made from a single rectangle of fabric or two rectangles of fabric. We do not have scraps to sell on for rags which may at a later date end up in a landfill site covered with engine oil or other muck.

3
What about the wraps then. Why are they so good?
We designed these too. All the wraps we tried had faults- wicking, leaking, not fitting properly. We have tweaked our design to make what we consider to be the best wrap on the market. It is airy, roomy and well shaped to fit over many styles of shaped nappies, and, as we have stated for the past 2 years, suitable for wearing over a disposable nappy to boost its performance and make it look better. Our wraps really do fit over a disposable nappy. Others claim to but are a poor fit. With a kiwi wrap over the top, a disposable would find it hard to leak onto clothes and/ or bedding.

4
How much will it cost me?
If you choose to use our 100% cotton Quick Flip nappy system, you can birth to potty your baby from as little as £240. If you want to use size 2 nappies folded down from birth then this amount could be less.

5
How many real nappies will I need?
You can manage on as few as 10 nappies and 5 wraps, if you wash every day. We do suggest 15 nappies, although you would still only need 5 wraps as you do not need to wash the wraps at every change- they can be wiped out and aired. A new baby needs changing every 3 hours which means 8 changes per 24 hours, until baby goes all night without a change.

6
Why are little kiwi nappies such good value?
Simply put our nappies work. They usually need no extra boosting and are reliable and comfortable. We believe that cloth nappying is best for babies and best for our planet and our aim is to make cloth accessible for all mums and dads across the world. When you buy from us you can be sure of buying a quality product which does its job.

7
If the nappies are so absorbent why do you sell boosters?
We sell boosters because no matter how absorbent any nappy is, there will always be a baby who can outwee it. A booster placed between the nappy and the wrap can also give a little extra reassurance to a new parent trying a cloth nappy overnight for the first time. The Packer nappies need boosters as they are less absorbent on their own than the kiwi flips. They are sold with one booster per Packer.

8
What size nappies will I need?
You can choose to use small cloth nappies (rise approx 15-16 inches) on a new baby until they outgrow them (usually around 4 months) and then size medium nappies until they potty train. The medium Kiwi Flip cloth nappy has a generous rise of approx 18 inches(measure from front top to back top)and a back width of approx 19 inches, and should see most babies through to potty training. We do offer the option of a mini size nappy for prem and tiny babies (under 8lb) and a large size nappy which is sized for babies over 35lb and has a maximum waist size of 28 inches (approx). These sizes are available only on nappyelite currently and if you need a particular size or colour then please do ask as sometimes we have products made up but not yet listed.

Our wraps are mostly available in small or medium size. The small is made to fit over small size nappies and the medium is made for medium sizes. The medium has a rise of about 20 inches and a maximum waist size of 25 inches comfortably. As a guide the large size wrap has a rise of about 24 inches and a maximum waist size of about 26 inches comfortably.

9
At what age do the sizes fit?
The small size fits most babies from birth to around 15lb which is about 4 months. The medium size fits most babies from 15lb to 35lb which is usually enough to see a baby through to potty training. However all babies are different and on a larger or smaller than average baby these times and sizes would be different.

10
Do I need a nappy liner and what sort?
We do not actually recommend nappy liners. We do offer fleece liners on nappyelite if you really want them, but have found through great personal experience that cotton terry loops are great for catching and holding poo which may otherwise slide off a liner. Our Packer nappies do have a fleece fitting on the inside for holding the boosting in place which can act as a stay dry liner.
Fleece liners are recommended to keep babies skin dry as the fleece wicks moisture away through it into the nappy itself.
We are looking into finding a supplier of paper liners to be able to offer them for customers to try.

11
Any washing tips for easy washing?
Rinse them in cold water (to release wee from the nappy fibres), wash them with detergent at the temperature you choose, rinse them again and that is it. If you live in a hard water area we recommend using a full dose of bio powder as you need the action of the detergent to break down the hardness in the water. If you live in a soft water area you can use whatever detergent you want to, even a non bio. Some parents choose to use soap nuts too and these are available online. Due to the shape of the kiwi flips they are really easy to clean thoroughly so you can use hand washing as a method too.
We do not recommend a softener as this can coat fibres and reduce the absorbency, however a clay based softener such as that found in bold 2 in 1 appears to be fine. If your nappies are stained you can hang them in the sun which may well remove them.

12
Do I really need to wash the nappies before I use them?
Fabric, when it is produced, can be coated with residue from the making up process. We recommend that all new nappies (not wraps necessarily) be washed before use as the residue can lower the absorbency of the nappy. Repeated washing increases absorbency.

13
Do I have to soak my soiled nappies?
We are currently looking into whether nappies may have a longer life if they are soaked. A happy medium between soaking and not soaking is to rinse the nappy well in cold water before it goes in the bucket to stop wee from drying into the fibres. Many cloth users leave their nappies in the bucket as they come off the baby and this appears fine. So do not worry- you do not have to have buckets of soggy water around the house. A small tip- if your nappy bucket does start to smell, stick a cotton pad to the inside of the lid and regularly drop some tea tree oil on it.

14
Can I wash liners?
Soiled fleece liners can have any solids shaken off into the toilet, then they go in the bucket with the dirty nappies and are washed as normal.

15
And how do I dry them when they are washed?
The kiwi flip nappy is designed so it dries quickly while giving good absorbency. It opens flat so is ideal for line drying. It can be tumble dried too if you want too, and if you find your nappies go crispy after line drying, stick them in the dryer for 10 minutes to soften them, or rub them with a towel to fluff them up. The packer nappies may take a little longer to dry as they have boosting layers inside.

16
What nappy wraps do I need and how many?
We always recommend our own wraps. We designed them because we could not find a decent wrap which fulfilled all our needs. We wanted leak proof, comfortable, easy use and reliable wraps. We do not put flimsy pack filler wraps into our sets. These wont be put to the bottom of the basket or dumped as they really work. You do not have to wash the wraps with every change, in fact they normally only need a wash if they get dirty or if they start to smell. A simple wipe out and airing between wearings is all that is usually necessary. Therefore we recommend 10 nappies and 5 wraps if you plan to wash every day, and 15 nappies and 5 wraps if you want to wait longer. You can also opt to purchase additional wraps with the bigger set at a reduced rate, and can boost your nappy selection with nappy budget packs.

17
What about nappy rash?
A baby is no more likely to get a nappy rash from a cloth nappy than they would in a disposable. In fact they would normally suffer less because a cloth nappy contains no chemicals whereas disposables are usually stuffed with them in order to make them absorbent.

18
How long will my nappies last?
We are currently using nappies which are on their third baby, along with new ones of course. It can depend on how you treat your nappies though!
