About the cloth nappy elite.
If you’re looking for beautiful, high quality, well made cloth nappies, wraps and other beautiful and practical baby products, then you are in exactly the right place. Every nappy and cover on this website, has been carefully and lovingly crafted from the best quality fabrics available at the time of manufacture.
The cloth nappies and wraps not only look great, they work too, and work well. Our designs have been well tested so you can be sure to receive a quality product that does what it says on the tin. We have been producing nappy change and play mats since 2005, and soft toys for babies since school days.
You don't have to choose between pretty or functional, practical or beautiful. Each and every cloth nappy is made to the highest specifications from bright colours and fabrics. With a choice of beautiful and unique nappy covers to go over the top, these cloth nappies are exactly what you have been looking for.
Almost all of the cloth nappies and wraps on this site are handmade and as such there may be small differences between the items that you receive and the items pictured on our website. This should be seen as a sign that your product is not mass produced and that you have an item which is unique. We pride ourselves on our high standards and high quality of our items. Our aim is to provide beautiful practical products which you will not get anywhere else.
We make our Nappy Elite nappies in 2 shapes the Quick Flip shape and the Standard shape. The Standard is shaped like our packer nappies but usually does not feature the packing pocket. The quick flip is made to our unique registered design.
Our wraps are made to our own design which we have tweaked and finalised to form the best wrap we have ever seen, tried and used, and believe me we have trialled a few. The nappy elite wrap has been tested worldwide and has received double thumbs up from everyone due to its close fitting, comfortable, leak proof design. We also now stock the tinyeco wraps which are similar in style and construction but which are slimmer in the bum area. Tinyeco wraps are also made in England.
The kiwi flip cloth nappy is unique in the way that it is formed from flat rectangles of fabric that are cut and elasticised in such a way, that when finished, they form a fitted cloth nappy which opens flat for washing and drying, yet which flips together easily to form a fitted nappy for your baby. Easy to wash and easy to wear! It causes no waste in production because none of the fabric is cut away. Next to nothing goes in the bin, and there is no fabric waste left over to be sold for rags which may well end up in landfill sites covered with oil. Because we work from home we are not powering or heating another building and by buying from a UK home based manufacturer you can help to keep cloth nappy air miles down. Guilt free shopping! What could be better?
Why buy from Nappy Elite?
We are a small family business which works hard, from home, to provide parents with practical, reliable, useful products. We pride ourselves on our production methods and on the fact that our products are original and unique. And because we are small and friendly we have time to listen to, and help all our customers. We are well used to using cloth nappies, we have 5 children. We know a fair amount about cloth nappying and parenting in general, and use this knowledge to produce practical usable products for parents and carers alike.
Why choose a Quick Flip cloth nappy?
The quick flip cloth nappy is the only truly unique cloth nappy design available and, to put it bluntly, it works. It is absorbent and well fitting, and because it folds flat it is easy to wash and quicker drying than some other products available.
Where did the idea come from?
Disposable nappies just didn't cut it for us so we started using the cloth nappies available at the time. After suffering the washing himself, Rob decided to design something a little quicker drying for our own use- he was complaining of the drying time associated with padded cloth nappies and decided to do something about it. He laid a terry square in front of him and thought to himself "now, how can I have the benefits of the ease of drying of this terry square and still have a nappy that goes on easily?" So the quick flip was born.
We saw how these cloth nappies could benefit other parents so decided to offer them up for sale. The design has been tweaked and twiddled and has become the wonderful, practical, perfect cloth nappy you see today. They dry flat so no tumble dryer should be needed. They hang nicely so will go on a washing line easily with no need to turn them over to have any attached boosters hanging to dry. They stack flat so storage should not be a problem.
If you have an extremely heavy wetter additional boosters can be added between the flap layers although because they are made from two full layers, which fold to give 6 full layers rather than the slim line piece in the middle of most nappies, you shouldn't find extra boosting necessary. If you choose to back fold the nappy, there are no seams inside against the baby's skin. They can be folded wider or narrower for chunkier or slimmer babies.
How does it work?
The Kiwi Flip is a simple cloth nappy that folds flat and flips shut quickly and easily, in fact it is so easy that our 8 year old can change one, even on a wriggly 13 month old. It is basically a single piece (or 2 rectangles) of absorbent material cut and sewn in such a way that when the two sides are folded in it forms a perfectly shaped fitted cloth nappy, ready for use on your baby. This gives a full 6 layers of absorbency where needed but only 2 layers for easy, quick and clean washing and drying.
Why is it called the Kiwi Quick Flip?
It flips together quickly. Oh and it can be flipped over and used inside out as it is totally reversible.
Why cloth nappies?
There are too many disposables in the landfill already from the past 40 or so years of dumping them there. Can you imagine if there had been disposables at the time of Shakespeare? A busy mum could have been changing the baby at the opening of Macbeth in 1608, wrapped the offending item in plastic, and mummified it for archaeologists of today to dig up. Can you imagine the sort of headlines in the history books? "17th century man wrapped his poo in plastic" Or if there had been disposables in 1507 at the time of the Norwich Fire? We'd be digging up the parcels still. And if people in our time wouldn't have found them, whatever would our children's children find when they go digging? What do you think Cupid would look like in a disposable? If the arrow caught him in the rear he'd certainly feel it and all the lovely gel crystals would fall out everywhere. Not so much spreading love as spreading chemicals.
What's in it for me?
Aside from becoming a member of the ever growing circle of cloth users both nation and worldwide, you will have the knowledge that whilst you are sitting indoors in the warm cuddling your baby late at night, other parents nationwide will be running to the all night shops for nappies because they have run out. You'll be able to buy nappies and wraps to match your babies outfits and in the summer a simple shirt and nappy are ideal for wearing out and about. Cloth nappying can be as economical or expensive as you choose to make it. You will save money though, I know we have. Some of the nappies my youngest is using are on their third baby in this family. You couldn't do that with a disposable nappy! Yes, second hand, or pre loved nappies are fine to use. Give them a good wash before using on your own baby and this is an excellent way to save money. Money was a big factor in our switch to cloth alongside the inadequacy of the disposables.
What's in it for my baby?
There have been studies into the chemical composition of the gel inside disposable nappies ( not eco disposables or paper disposables which rely on the material in them for absorbency rather than gel). This gel can contain chemicals which have been linked to possible cancer in later life in both boys and girls, and no I am not telling you this just to make you try cloth. It is a fact. See, the way a cloth nappy works is that the fabric accounts for the absorbency, the more fabric there is (or the type of fabric), the more absorbent the nappy. With a disposable, the paper could never soak up enough on its own so the inside is stuffed chock full of chemical gel crystals which absorb the wetness and swell up- ever had one burst on your baby because it is over soaked? Those white bits are the gel from inside and ingesting enough could kill a child.
When your little baby starts to stand up and then to walk, he or she will undoubtedly fall down on his or her bottom. The added benefit of a padded cloth nappy is that it makes a fine portable cushion! And it keeps a baby warm! I'll never forget when my middle daughter toilet trained ( at 30 months). We had just got out of the car on our shopping trip and she suddenly wailed "my bottom's cold". The poor soul hadn't been out without a padded cloth bum before and was only wearing a dress. Draughty wasn't the word.
What's new then?
We have a second nappy in our collection- the Packer- for people who prefer a traditionally hourglass shaped fitted nappy. The Packer is available as a fitted sized nappy in small to fit most babies from birth-15lbs, or medium to fit most babies from 15-35lbs. It has a fleece pocket inside which holds boosters and acts as a stay dry liner against babies skin. If you don't want fleece next to your baby then use it inside out. The pocket will still hold the boosters.
As we are expanding our range of baby products, we are bringing in some items from other suppliers. Anything which is not made here will say on the description that it is not made here.
Which fabric is best for me?
It depends on what you want your nappy for. Bamboo fabric, soon to be relabelled viscose, has been hailed as a wonderfully revolutionary fabric for nappies and clothing alike. Reported to be antibacterial (though only for about 100 washes) and good for nappy rash, it reportedly absorbs 40% more moisture than cotton terry. It does take more washes, at least 10, to reach it's full absorbency and takes longer to dry than cotton. It is not great in tumble dryers, though it will tolerate gentle drying, and does not like to be washed over 60 degrees. Repeated heat attacking bamboo terry can cause the loop pile to crump down. This can be remedied in some cases by rubbing the pile with a stiff towel. Bamboo also can shrink in the wash, not a lot but more than cotton terry. We deliberately make our bamboo nappies up slightly bigger to allow for this, although in the early days we didn't- as a small personable company though we listened to our customers feedback and improved in this area. We appreciate all feedback comments from our customers and visitors to our site. Please leave any comments using the on site contact form.
Cotton terry is perfect for nappies. It is absorbent, cuddly, soft and available in a good range of colours. The terry we use on Nappy Elite is mostly 90% cotton, 10% polyester and is washable at 60 degrees and can be tumble dried- let's face it, who really manages without a tumble dryer in the middle of a typical British summertime when it's pouring with rain? Although nappies can dry over radiator racks, airing racks and on hanging whatsits- you know, those wooden racks that drop down from the ceiling?- if you are in desperate need of a dry nappy a quick tumble can be invaluable.
Which fastening do I want?
We offer a choice of fastenings . Nippa- these nappies are supplied with no attached fastenings. The Kiwi Flip was designed to be a nippa nappy. Using a nippa means the front part of the nappy can be pulled up as high as needed to fit YOUR baby and the tabs can be pulled round as tight as needed. The whole nappy can be turned inside out and the flaps can be folded backwards. We highly recommend buying nippa nappies as they can be tucked, folded, basically they give THE best fit in our humble but informed opinion. The Packer nappies only have aplix fastenings if they are patterned on the outer.
A nappy with aplix attached needs no other means of fastening. However it does mean that folds are limited and the nappy cannot be turned completely inside out. These nappies are fitted with wash tabs to fold the hook tape shut whilst in the wash so the hooks don't catch on other items. The fronts of the aplix nappies can crumple but the inner of the front can easily be pulled upwards to stop the tape rubbing the tummy.
I would always recommend nippa fit, simply because it is so much easier to fit a nappy with a nippa and the sizing is not so restricted. This is however just my honest opinion.
Wraps?
Wrap is the term we use for our covers. The Nappy Elite wraps are waterproof breathable covers made from UK sourced PUL (breathable waterproof fabric) and an outer layer of fabric. Even our standard wraps over are covered with white fleece on the outside- we don't like thin flimsy covers and don't really see why everyday wraps can't be exciting too! Yes fleece can bobble if washed in with terry but since all the wraps in our sets are fleece covered, there'll be enough each day to wash on their own, or they can be wiped out and aired, hand washed, or even chucked in with your ordinary washing- though not towels.
The designer wraps made for the nappy elite site are covered with gorgeous fabrics in colours and prints, sourced as far as possible from within the UK. We trawl shops and send our wonderful parents off with instructions when they go travelling to bring back lengths of different fabrics for turning into our nappy wraps. Sometimes there may only be one of each pattern, sometimes more, but one thing is sure, you know you are getting a good quality wrap for showing off. They are fantastic for use over cloth nappies and perfect for use over disposable nappies too! Yes even the most hardened of disposable users can have a fun and fresh look for their babies nappies. Please note that the fleece covered wraps are suitable for day and night wear, and for car trips, but the designer wraps are more suited to day wear, although with an absorbent nappy, such as a kiwi flip or a boosted Packer, they could perform equally as well overnight although care must be taken to ensure all outer fabric is turned to the outside to minimise wicking.
All our wraps are fastened with hook and loop tape. The front band is only sewn through the outer layer to stop wet soaking through the stitch lines. The medium sized nappy elite and little kiwi wraps feature a crossover patch for fastening round slimmer babies. The wraps are roomy and airy and elasticised at the back and legs for good containment. The nappy elite wraps are all hand made. The TE tinyeco wraps are made with a layer of top quality anti pil fleece on the outer and soft breathable waterproof fabric on the inner. Thay too fasten with aplix and due to their slimmer styling do not have the crossover tab on the outer.
